While designing a new patisserie for renowned pastry chef Karen Krasne, LUCE was commissioned to create an artwork that would shield a less than beautiful 1940’s brick façade when budget would not allow for renovation. The studio had spent much time studying the architectural façade as veil; not unlike the similar approach in fashion. The veil covers with translucent beaty but reveals a inner self that seeks exploration. The SCREEN at Extraordinary is just that; a thin layer of water jet cut aluminum set 12” from the brick façade that attracts the eye from the street towards an experience that is magical within. The act of taking the dive to commit to’ eating cake’ is sinful and yet irresistible. The screen lures us inward, through the large pivot opening and to the glass lit cases of culinary delights. Additional intriguing is the origin of the pattern cut into the metal. In truth, the microscopic image of flour; in fantasy so many other readings; champagne bubbles, air gaps in the structure of cake or bread…there have been many over the life of this façade. Every single one counts.
