The design for Nissan’s Southern California-based 60,000 SF Design Studio was conceived in the 1980’s a a concrete bunker, elevating industry privacy to its extreme. LUCE was retained in 2002 to open the existing façade, reorient interior spaces and promote improved visual and verbal communication amongst studio colleagues. Ten-foot-wide doors and windows created channels of cross dialogue between the conceptual studio, the color design studio, and the contour engineering studio. Choice and application of industrial materials, including felt and cork, intentionally energized innovation and provided a “canvas” for Nissan’s creative work in the new space. The building has evolved over time, allowing for new technologies to occupy the spaces throughout. The flexible nature of the LUCE design allows for an ever evolving process; the test of timeless design.
