ARTIFACT @ Mingei is an ethnically focused café set within the context of the Mingei Museum’s ground floor public exhibition spaces. The breadth of the museum’s collection is expressed in a menu that is driven by tastes and spices of international diversity. The space is filled with hand-crafted contemporary and classic modern furnishings, celebrating design as craft. LUCE commissioned artist Claudy Jongstra to craft a wool felt tapestry hung over the 35’ long bar counter. This artful acoustic intervention is paired with a perforated ceiling designed by LUCE to celebrate the art of music in a space that is vibrant and filled with energy. Custom enclosed  classic Vitsoe Shelving is used to display the restaurant’s wine offering; another celebration of craft and its relationship to nature. The outdoor Museum Courtyard offers diners a stunning setting to be surrounded by art in the Museum’s collection; The copper mural ‘Variations on a Theme’ 1956 and LUCE’s ‘Hedgerow’ fence enclosure 2021. ARTIFACT is an intrinsic part of the Museum’s daily life, merging food with design with art.
