Lemke La Jolla

Subtle variations and repetitions—the ‘fugue’, is a favorite musical form of the owner’s (a Salk Institute neuroscientist). This musical obsession is the basis for transforming his 2,300 sf La Jolla residence into a place for creative meditation and musical composition. Luce reduced the house to its essential elements and created a Minimalist living space, executing his desire for clean lines and clear perspectives. The plan emphasized two intersecting axes: one path through new front and back pivot doors towards views; the other, “the spine,” served as a physical container for storage, bathing, life.
